How to Get into Ketosis Fast

​More and more people are jumping on the keto diet wagon but the days before you enter ketosis can be difficult. Ever wondered if you could enter ketosis quicker? Want to eat out with friends or celebrate a special occasion? Here are some tips

What is Ketosis?

To put it simply, ketosis is the metabolic state where your body switches from using glucose as the main source of fuel to burning fat as fuel
The definition of “low carb” varies from diet to diet but generally speaking, people need to stay very low carb (the first phrase of the Atkins Diet recommends you to stay under 20g of net carbs for two weeks) and it takes around 3-5 days for most people to use up your glycogen stores and get into ketosis (The Atkins Diet recommends that you stay in the first phrase for two weeks). 

​Since carbs are in a lot of our favorite foods-pasta, sauces, bread… and social occasions are pretty much inevitable, it is not uncommon for people to have to get in and out of ketosis and if it takes almost a week to get into ketosis, it may be disheartening ​

Exogenous Ketones

​​This is probably the quickest way (some products claim that you can go into ketosis within 15 minutes of consuming the supplements) but these supplements can also be very expensive

Exercise

​All your daily activities require energy so needless to say, the more energy you use during the day, the more calories (and the more glycogen store) your body use. Increasing your activity levels is a good way to speed up the exhaustion of your glycogen store. ​

Fat-fasting

What is “fat fasting”?
  • This is a ketone-boosting approach involving a combination of calorie reduction and increased fat intake 
  • A more extreme version of a keto diet

How does it work?
  • 1000-1200 calories per day for 1-3 days (5-7 days maximum) 
  • about 80-90% of your calories should come from fat and less than 5% of calories should come from carbs
 
When should/can it be used?
  • Help you get into ketosis quicker
  • After a cheat day/meal
  • When you hit a weight loss plateau
